Widener Law and PBA launch new business law externship program

Beginning this fall, students at Widener Law Commonwealth will have the unique opportunity to participate in the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) - Widener Law Commonwealth Business Law Externship Program.

The externship is designed to give students the opportunity to work with the PBA Business Law Section Executive Council under the supervision of Commonwealth Professor of Business Law Juliet Moringiello, who is currently Chair of the PBA Business Law Section..

Professor Moringiello stressed that the internship will provide valuable experiential learning experiences for law students outside of the classroom. These experiences will include legal writing and research, statutory drafting and working closely with business law leaders throughout Pennsylvania.

“The externship will help students get a good inside view of what business lawyers do and how involvement with a professional organization can help them in their career,” said Moringiello.

The externship gives students the opportunity to assist Section committees in reviewing business law statutes promulgated by the Uniform Law Commission to assess their feasibility for enactment in Pennsylvania. Externship students will assist with the preparation of the Business Law Section’s newsletter by researching and summarizing Pennsylvania’s judicial decisions in business law disputes. Students in the externship will also work with the Section’s Young Lawyer Engagement Committee to develop strategies for providing relevant practice tools to young lawyers embarking on a career in business law.

Each semester one student will be chosen for the two-credit externship, which is open to both regular and evening division students. Students who apply for the externship must meet the prerequisite of at least one semester of coursework towards the Business Advising Certificate.
