Alumnus to be honored with Excellence in Public Service Award

David Sunday ’07 carries principles he learned while serving in the U.S. Navy with him each day when he reports to work as district attorney of York County.

Those principles -- honor, commitment, and courage -- guided him on his path to becoming a lawyer. They now serve him as he leads the York County District Attorney’s Office.

Sunday’s history of serving and giving back to the community have earned him the honor of being chosen to receive the 2018 Excellence in Public Service Award. The award is presented each fall to a graduate or friend of the law school for dedication and contributions to the legal community.

Sunday will be honored at the Evening at the Capitol event on Nov. 13, in the State Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg.

“We are proud to be honoring David for his efforts and accomplishments as district attorney of York County,” said Dean Christian Johnson. “He has worked hard to get to this place in his career and he continually shows compassion and dedication to the community he serves. He is an example of excellence and what it means to combine a career in law with public service.”

The York County District Attorney’s Office prosecutes more than 10,000 criminal cases a year. Sunday has been a prosecutor with the office since 2009 and has supervised major crime cases and the Felony Narcotics Unit. He has also served as the legal advisor to the district attorney’s Drug Task Force and York County Quick Response Team. Sunday is a Navy veteran, serving in the Persian Gulf where he participated in Operation Desert Strike.

York County voters elected him to the role of top prosecutor in November 2017, and he was sworn in as district attorney in January.

“Every day I go in to work and I am grateful,” he said. “I love what I do, and I love knowing that what I do, and what my team does, makes a difference in the lives of people every day.”

The Evening at the Capitol will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 5-7 p.m. The event will be held in the Main Rotunda of the Pennsylvania State Capitol. If you would like to attend, please click here to RSVP or call 717-541-3974.
