York County District Attorney Honored with Excellence in Public Service Award
David W. Sunday, Jr., York County district attorney, has always felt the call to serve.
The 2007 alumnus was recently recognized during the Evening at the Capitol event and honored with the 2018 Excellence in Public Service Award from the law school. The award is presented each fall to a graduate of the law school for dedication and contributions to government law.
“I love knowing that what I do makes a difference in the lives of people every day,” said Sunday.
York County voters elected Sunday to serve as the district attorney of York County last November, and he was sworn into the role in January. His election to the role of top prosecutor caps a 10-year career at the office. He has supervised major crime cases and the Felony Narcotics Unit. He also served as the legal advisor to the district attorney’s Drug Task Force and York County Quick Response Team.
“We are so proud of the dedication David has shown and the public service he has provided,” said Dean Christian Johnson. “He continually shows compassion and excellence in his position as the York County district attorney, and we couldn’t be more honored to call him an alumnus of Widener Law Commonwealth.”
Sunday was presented with the award by Widener Law Commonwealth Professor of Law and Government Jill Family. Family is also the director of the Law and Government Institute.
“Awarding the Excellence in Public Service Award is one of my favorite tasks at Widener Law Commonwealth," said Family. "While we specifically recognize one individual each year, the award also serves as a reminder of all of our alumni’s contributions.”
The event was co-hosted by Megan Martin ’94, secretary and parliamentarian for the Pennsylvania Senate, Sen. Richard L. Alloway II ’02, state senator for the 33rd district, and Eugene A. DePasquale ’02, auditor general of Pennsylvania.
Prior to the Evening at the Capitol event, the annual bar pass swearing in ceremony was held at the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. The Hon. Henry Van Eck ’98 of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, performed the ceremonial induction for graduates who passed the most recent bar exam.
About a dozen alumni participated in the ceremony.
