Helping Our First Responders – Wills for Heroes

Widener Law Commonwealth, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, recently hosted Wills for Heroes at our campus. Wills for Heroes is a free service that provides wills, living wills, and financial and healthcare powers of attorney to first responders, veterans and their spouses/partners.

On Saturday, December 10, a dozen attorneys, notaries, interns from the Pennsylvania Bar Association Pro Bono Office, and several WLC students (including some who were finishing up their final exams) were able to assist more than 30 first responders with vital legal documents.

WLC alum Paul Edger, who assisted student volunteer Shane Macas in coordinating the event, was pleased with its success.

“I am extremely thankful for the continued involvement of Widener Law Commonwealth being a key sponsor of the PBA Young Lawyers Division Wills for Heroes event. Every time we are considering an event in Harrisburg, the law school is always willing to host and make sure our first responders and essential workers are cared for,” he said. “I am blessed to be a Widener Law Commonwealth alum and a PBA member. The turnout of law school alums, students, and staff involvement ensures the program launched without any issues. We look forward to the next event at Widener Law Commonwealth and the PBA’s continued collaboration.”

During the event, Edger was awarded the 2022 PBA Pro Bono Award for his work with Wills for Heroes and related legal assistance efforts in the community.

“We were proud to host Wills for Heroes again to help first responders, military veterans, and their partners with vital legal documents to protect them and their families,” said WLC Dean Michael Hussey. “These professionals put their lives on the line to help others. By assisting them through the Wills for Heroes program, we were able to provide them invaluable security and peace of mind.”

An additional Wills for Heroes event at the law school is anticipated in early 2023.

WLC students who participated in the Wills for Heroes event included Shane Macas, Nicolas Grimes, Sarah Burke, Ashley Leonard, Jesse Tomkiewicz, Jessica Collier, Lindsay Williamson, Rachel McLean, Gabrielle Lipari, Kaitlin Smearcheck, Keri Nace, Nicole Marzzacco, Jadé Curtis, Sierra Messick, Tommy Begley, and Shakshi Kshatriya.
