Why simply uphold the law when you can form, influence, and define new, wide-reaching legislation? Widener Law Commonwealth’s Law and Government Institute prepares the next generation of lawyers and helps you launch your career before you’ve finished your degree.
As the only law school in Pennsylvania's capital, Widener Law Commonwealth's location is the ideal setting to learn about public policy and the law.
Our three certificate programs explore how government works and the roles lawyers play in making and implementing laws:
ADMINISTRATIVE LAW/CONSTITUTIONAL LAW CERTIFICATE
Focuses on the balance of power between government branches and the laws that govern administrative agencies. You’ll have the chance to see government in action while gaining a greater understanding of how society functions.
LEGISLATION & PUBLIC POLICY CERTIFICATE
Sheds greater light on the legislative process, including the drafting and interpretation of statutes, and opens the door to externship opportunities with the Pennsylvania Legislature and other lawmaking entities.
GOVERNMENT CONTRACTING CERTIFICATE
Focuses on the process of negotiating, drafting, and implementing contracts for goods and services, including information technology, on behalf of public entities.
Through internships and externships with the Governor’s Office of General Counsel and the Pennsylvania Legislature, you will shape your legal career. In the process, you will help draft legislation, provide legal advice to the Governor and Legislature, and see the legal process from both sides.
The Law and Government Institute regularly hosts a variety of public programs in which you and your fellow students will have a chance to explore and debate pressing legislative issues with local and state government leaders.
