The two candidates vying for the position of attorney general faced off in a debate at Widener Law Commonwealth.
Commissioner Josh Shapiro and Sen. John Rafferty debated on topics that included the constitutionality of laws, gun regulation, eliminating corruption and repairing the reputation of the Office of Attorney General.
Commissioner Shapiro focused on his goal of restoring trust to the Office of the Attorney General after recent scandal.
"I think we've got to be real about our experience, and real about who has a serious track record of turning government around and making it work again,” he said.
Sen. Rafferty agreed stating that the voters needed to have confidence that the candidate who is elected has the experience to take on the challenges of rebuilding the office and addressing tough issues such as corruption.
"Those things still exist in the halls of the capitol," Rafferty said. "It has to stop."
The debate was open to the public and sponsored by The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania Citizen Education Fund, Pennsylvania Women’s Forum, Widener University Commonwealth Law School - Law and Government Institute, the Center for Children’s Justice and the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR).
The forum was moderated by Corinna Wilson from Wilson500 and candidates were asked questions by a panel of journalists consisting of John Baer (Philadelphia Daily News), Steve Esack (Allentown Morning Call) and Karen Langley (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).
The new attorney general will be elected on Nov. 8.
