The private security staff is composed of a shift supervisor, as well as full-time and part-time security officers. These officers are contracted security, with authority limited to the immediate and adjacent vicinity of university property. The private security staff reports directly to Matt Sessa, Associate Director of Campus Safety Patrol Operations.
Officers do not carry weapons and do not have the power to arrest. They receive training in basic criminal laws and procedures, along with on-the-job and in-service instruction in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillation (AED).
The Campus Safety Department maintains an excellent working relationship with the Susquehanna Township Police Department, which has primary police jurisdiction for the campus. All matters brought to the Campus Safety Department's attention are investigated to determine appropriate action. The department also assists any member of the university community in contacting local law enforcement and encourages victims of crimes to report incidents to the appropriate police department.
Widener’s Department of Safety closely works with the Law School’s dean and Office of Student Affairs to disseminate information about safety and security to the campus community through notices, newsletters, and annual brochures.
