Faculty to Participate at Annual AALS Meeting

The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) will hold the 2016 Annual Meeting in New York City in January. Several members of the Widener Law Commonwealth faculty will be presenting, moderating discussions or have helped to organize sessions at the meeting.

This year the following faculty will be participating in the annual meeting:

• Associate Professor Anna Hemingway will be part of a panel presentation titled "Impossible Realities, Infinite Loops and Movable Staircases:  The Impact of Institutional Marginalization on the Tricky, Unpredictable, and Inconsistent Trajectory of the Non-Tenured Track Career."  The presentation is part of the new ARC of Career Programs at this year's meeting. She will be discussing the different professional development needs of professors at different stages of their careers.

• Professor Jill Family, Director of the Law and Government Center, organized the panel “Is Immigration Law Administrative Law.” Professor Family will also be moderating the panel that will be held on January 7. The panel will focus on the most recent executive actions of President Obama to establish a process for certain immigrant populations to apply for deferred action and the legal challenges of those actions that has renewed interest in the intersection of immigration law and administrative law.

• Professor Christopher Robinette acted as the chair elect of the Torts and Compensation Systems section of the event.

• Professor John Capowski served as chair of the American Association of Law School's Evidence Section, organized and will moderate for the section's AALS annual meeting program.  At the annual meeting, he will host a joint luncheon of the Evidence and Criminal Justice Sections. The Evidence Section's program will focus on reform of the hearsay rule and its exceptions.  While the rule against admitting hearsay and the hearsay exceptions have been evolving for hundreds of years, the area is one of continuing controversy.
