More than 85 runners recently took to the pavement for the inaugural Speedy Trial 5k held on the Widener Law Commonwealth campus. The event was organized by the Phi Alpha Delta – Pepper Chapter, a law fraternity.
The beneficiary of the race proceeds was MidPenn Legal Services and the Volunteer Income Tax Programs (VITA). The race raised $2,200 that will be donated to the organizations.
“We know that the organizations take on a great financial burden when helping individuals in our community that can’t afford legal aid that they so desperately need,” said Landa Porter, a member of Phi Alpha Delta and a 3L at Widener Law Commonwealth. “This was the way we felt we could help the organizations as much as they help the community.”
The course was designed by the law fraternity, which started and ended on the campus. Runners and walkers started at the campus book store and ran through several neighborhoods around the law school, before finishing the 3-mile race. A one-mile fun run was also held.
The race was sponsored by the following individuals and organizations: Berks County Bar Association, Widener Law Commonwealth Alumni Association, Metzger Wickersham, McNees, Gavin P. Holihan Law Firm, Dauphin County Bar Association, Society for the Prevention of Conviction, LexisNexis, Themis Bar Review, Bagel Lover’s, Starbucks, Ruby’s Massage Therapy, and Mind’s Eye Tattoo.
