Law students can spend a whole day thinking about the next reading, assignment or exam. Brielle Kimmins wanted to give them a place where they could put all of that down for a little while.
Kimmins, a second-year student and the Student Bar Association’s vice president of social, helped open a Wellness Corner on Friday, Sept. 25, in the Sidebar of Widener Law Commonwealth’s Student Organization Building. Students can stop in during regular campus hours to color, play a game, make a craft or simply take a break.
“Law school, particularly, is very taxing,” Kimmins said. Having a chance to pause and reconnect, she said, can make a difference.
The Wellness Corner was an idea Kimmins brought to her campaign for the SBA position. Once elected, she asked about a budget and began putting the space together. She added activities students can pick up whenever they have time, along with QR codes for study playlists and a phone line featuring encouraging messages from California schoolchildren.
She’s planning events there, too, including a board game night, a movie night, and yoga and meditation sessions.
SBA President Andrea Hernandez-Rodriguez, also a third-year student, hopes the corner draws more students to the Sidebar. It’s a comfortable place to spend time, she said, but one that students don’t always know about or use.
At Friday’s opening, she watched students from different class years gather in the space. “Seeing it full of people, it’s so awesome,” Hernandez-Rodriguez said.
Students can visit the Wellness Corner during regular campus hours.
