Emerita Professor of Law
Celebration of Life
The Widener University Commonwealth Law School community gathered together to honor the life, legacy, and gravity of Juliet M. Moringiello, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Law.
Former Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Juliet M. Moringiello was a leader in law reform on the state and national levels. Through her work with the Pennsylvania Bar Association Business Law Section, she played a key role in the enactment in Pennsylvania of Revised Articles 1, 7 and 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code and the Uniform Voidable Transactions Act. Professor Moringiello was an elected member of the American Law Institute and was a Uniform Law Commissioner for Pennsylvania. In 2020, she was appointed as Vice-Chair of the joint ALI/ULC Drafting Committee on the Uniform Commercial Code and Emerging Technologies. In 2021, the Pennsylvania Bar Association recognized Professor Moringiello’s law reform work by honoring her with the W. Edward Sell Business Lawyer Award. In 2022, she was selected by the Uniform Law Committee to serve as co-chair of a Study Committee on the Use of Tokens or Other Similar Products in Real Property Transactions.
Professor Moringiello was a versatile scholar whose interests included the online contracting process, creditors’ rights in digital assets, and the relationship between state and federal law in bankruptcy. Her articles on these topics have been published in several leading law reviews and have been cited by numerous state and federal courts. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York cited four of her articles in Berkson v. Gogo, LLC, 97 F. Supp. 3d 359 (E.D. N.Y. 2015), a widely cited opinion on assent to “click to agree” terms of service. In September 2022, her work was cited in a U.S. Department of Treasury publication, "Crypto-Assets: Implications for Consumers, Investors, and Businesses."
Professor Moringiello held several leadership positions in the American Bar Association Business Law Section and served as Chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Business Law Section in 2017-2018. She also served on the Board of Regents of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers.
In 2014 and 2021, the graduating class honored Professor Moringiello with the Outstanding Faculty Award for excellence in teaching, and she received the Douglas E. Ray Excellence in Faculty Scholarship Award four times. She was also a Professional Ski Instructors of America Level 1 certified Alpine ski instructor and could be found on winter weekends teaching skiing at Roundtop Mountain Resort.
