Justice William Strong Lecture on Ethics and the Business Lawyer: Corporate Law and Sustainability - Justice Strong's Enduring Influence
Ethics in business law played an important part of Justice William Strong’s jurisprudence at the U.S. Supreme Court.
In the European Union, ‘ethics’ in corporate governance is understood to mean ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance). Although the United States typically focuses on shareholder wealth maximization as the main test for corporate governance, recent market and regulatory developments suggest a new concern with climate change and ESG. The lecture will discuss whether there is a convergence evolving with what Europe is doing, whether Europe is converging with the U.S., or whether the US is taking a different route altogether.
Kern Alexander, professor of international financial law and banking regulation at the University of Zurich, will discuss the current debate over ‘corporate purpose’, highlighting the importance of integrating ‘ethics’ into corporate governance.
1 CLE credit (ethics) will be available.
