Widener Law Commonwealth alum announced as White House counsel

Widener Law Commonwealth graduates have a history of making an impact on a national level.

Donald F. McGahn II, a 1994 alum, is the most recent to take on a national, high-ranking role in his career.

The law school alum was recently appointed by president-elect Donald Trump to serve as White House counsel under the Trump Administration.

McGahn, who is a partner with Jones Day in Washington D.C., specializes in representing elected officials, candidates, national state parties, political consultants. He also previously served as a commissioner and chairman of the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Mr. McGahn and we are proud of our alumnus who is making an impact on a national level,” said Dean Christian Johnson. “We wish him great success in his new role.”

McGahn is one of several Widener Law Commonwealth alums who have gone on to have success on the national level.

A key program at Widener Law Commonwealth that leads law students into the study of government is the certificate program offered by the Law & Government Institute. The institute focuses on teaching students how government works and the roles that lawyers play in making and implementing law. Law students working towards a Law and Government Institute certificate have the opportunity to connect with government leaders and lawmakers on both a state and national level.

“Students who earn the certificate from the Law and Government Institute come away with a comprehensive understanding of government policies, procedures and the way laws are written,” said Dean Johnson. “This knowledge gives them a strategic advantage throughout their legal career.”
