Even War Has Rules: An Introduction to International Humanitarian Law

Hosted by the American Red Cross and held at Widener University Commonwealth Law School, Even War Has Rules: An Introduction to International Humanitarian Law will explore the legal and ethical principles that govern armed conflict around the world.

International humanitarian law (IHL), often referred to as the law of armed conflict, seeks to limit the effects of war by protecting human life and preserving human dignity during times of conflict. Rooted in customs and traditions and later codified through the Geneva Conventions, IHL establishes the rules that govern how wars are fought and who and what must be protected.

This program will provide an overview of the four fundamental principles of IHL and examine how those principles apply to conflicts across the globe today. Additional topics include the origins of the Red Cross movement, the development of the Geneva Conventions, the classification of armed conflicts, and protections afforded to civilians, prisoners of war, medical personnel, and humanitarian workers.

Participants include:
Margot Hillman, American Red Cross International Services
Robert DeSousa, Counsel, Eckert Seamans
Lieutenant General (Ret.) Charles Pede, former Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Army

Attendees are eligible to receive one hour of ethics Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit.
